Interest is a fee paid on borrowed assets. It is the price paid for the use of borrowed money, [1] or, money earned by deposited funds.[2] Assets that are sometimes lent with interest include money, shares, consumer goods through hire purchase, major assets such as aircraft, and even entire factories in finance lease arrangements. The interest is calculated upon the value of the assets in the same manner as upon money. Interest can be thought of as "rent of money". When money is deposited in a bank, interest is typically paid to the depositor as a percentage of the amount deposited; when money is borrowed, interest is typically paid to the lender as a percentage of the amount owed. The percentage of the principal that is paid as a fee over a certain period of time (typically one month or year), is called the interest rate. Interest is compensation to the lender for the risk of not being paid back, and for forgoing other useful investments that could have been made with the loaned asset. These forgone investments are known as the opportunity cost. Instead of the lender using the assets directly, they are advanced to the borrower. The borrower then enjoys the benefit of using the assets ahead of the effort required to obtain them, while the lender enjoys the benefit of the fee paid by the borrower for the privilege. The amount lent, or the value of the assets lent, is called the principal. This principal value is held by the borrower on credit. Interest is therefore the price of credit, not the price of money as it is commonly believed to be.[citation needed] Interest is the price paid for the use of savings over a given period of time. In ancient biblical Israel, it was against the Law of Moses to charge interest on private loans [3].During the Middle Ages, time was considered to be property of God. Therefore, to charge interest was considered to be commerce with God's property. Also, St. Thomas Aquinas, the leading theologian of the Catholic Church, argued that the charging of interest is wrong because it amounts to "double charging", charging for both the thing and the use of the thing. The church regarded this as a sin of usury; nevertheless, this rule was never strictly obeyed and eroded gradually until it disappeared during the industrial revolution.[citation needed] Usury has always been viewed negatively by the Roman Catholic Church. The Second Lateran Council condemned any repayment of a debt with more money than was originally loaned, the Council of Vienna explicitly prohibited usury and declared any legislation tolerant of usury to be heretical, and the first scholastics reproved the charging of interest. In the medieval economy, loans were entirely a consequence of necessity (bad harvests, fire in a workplace) and, under those conditions, it was considered morally reproachable to charge interest.[citation needed] It was also considered morally dubious, since so goods were produced through the lending of money, and thus it should not be compensated, unlike other activities with direct physical output such as blacksmithing or farming.[4] Interest has often been looked down upon in Islamic civilization as well for the same reason for which usury

The film is based on the Broadway musical The Sound of Music, with songs written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and with the musical book written by the writing team of Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Ernest Lehman wrote the screenplay. The musical originated with the book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp. It contains many popular songs, including "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", "Do-Re-Mi", "Sixteen Going on Seventeen", and "The Lonely Goatherd", as well as the title song. The movie version was filmed on location in Salzburg, Austria and Bavaria in Southern Germany, and also at the 20th Century Fox Studios in California. It was photographed in 70 mm Todd-AO by Ted D. GAMES Diplomacy is a strategic board game created by Allan B. Calhamer in 1954 and released commercially in 1959.[1] Its main distinctions from most board wargames are its negotiation phases (players spend much of their time forming and betraying alliances with other players)[2] and the complete absence of luck. Set in Europe just before the beginning of World War I, Diplomacy is played by seven players, each controlling the armed forces of a major European Power. Each player aims to move his or her few starting units—and defeat those of others—to win possession of a majority of strategic cities and provinces marked as "supply centers" on the map; these supply centers allow players who control them to produce more units. Diplomacy was the first commercially published game to be played by mail (PBM); only chess, which is in the public domain, saw significant postal play earlier. Diplomacy was also the first commercially published game to generate an active hobby with amateur fanzines; only science-fiction/fantasy and comics fandom saw fanzines earlier. Competitive face-to-face (FtF) Diplomacy tournaments have been held since the 1970s. Play of Diplomacy by e-mail(PBEM) has been widespread since the late 1980's.[3] Diplomacy has been published in the United States by Games Research, Avalon Hill, and Hasbro; the name is currently a registered trademark of Hasbro's Avalon Hill division. Diplomacy has also been licensed to various companies for publication in other countries. Diplomacy is also played on the world wide web, adjudicated by computer and/or a human gamemaster. In its catalog, Avalon Hill advertised Diplomacy as John F. Kennedy's[4] and Henry Kissinger's favorite game. Dr. Kissinger described it as his favorite in an interview published in a games magazine.[5] Walter Cronkite was also reported to be a fan of the game.[6] Basic setting and overview A Diplomacy board, showing the different land and sea territories, starting borders, and the location of supply centers.

BOOKS Background In mid-2005, the database added additional elements to make the site more of an all-encompassing comic book resource. All issues now include a comic book price guide, which shows the user the current resale value at multiple grading levels of the book. Cover scans now include high-resolution versions, for a more detailed online look at the artwork. Both these new options require membership to the site, which is free. Features The main database is logically arraigned by publisher and easily browseable for those just wanting to wander through various issues and series. It contains creator information such as writer, penciler, inker and other artistic contributors, of each of the comics compiled in the database. Synopses of many of the comics are also included. Key issues include notes on why they are important, and what milestones the book is known for. Over one-third of the issues include scans of the original cover art. Readers can search on specific fields, such as writer or colorist, to find specific issues one is looking for. The Big Comic Book DataBase allows users to register with the site. Users can then create their own compilations of their favorite comics in their private area. Users can also vote on their favorite books, or add reviews to any comic. The Big Comic Book DataBase is a work in progress; much like the Wikipedia, the Big Comic Book DataBase relies on volunteers to help edit the myriad of books in its database. Comic book fans can add information to each book individually (from a link on each page), or choose to apply to edit a whole series.
